What's
new at the Zoo - January 4, 2005?
Well, not much! It was a sunny, cold morning and most of the
animals seemed to be enjoying the comfort of their inside
domains. Smart cookies! It was very ummm brisk today
- it actually dipped below the freezing mark last night. |
|
A couple
of emus huddled beside the fence and seemed quite interested
in my purse which I'd put on the ground. They kept trying
to peck at it through the chain link. |
|
I was
again struck by their massive bodies. This picture was taken
from above, looking down on the emu - its legs aren't as short
as they appear. |
|
Seemingly
impervious to the cold, a pair of hippos lumbered back and
forth in search of brekkies. They paid no attention to the
nearby gazelles and zebras. |
|
I find
it entrancing how this huge, cumbersome creature can snuffle
up vegetation the way she does. |
|
Like
clockwork, the lion announces his start to the day with a
huge morning roar. He does this every morning, right about
the same time. I wondered if he had indigestion, but one of
the Zoo guides told me he was just exercising his vocal cords
and confirming his territory. |
|
He
was kind enough to pose quite near to me today.
|
|
His
mate remained in the sunshine on a rock quite far away.

Two
Simiangs share breakfast. It's so frustrating trying to
photograph these little fellows because of the glare of
the glass, which is worse on a sunny day. They
are very friendly little guys and usually run right up to
the glass to say hello. Today they were more interested
in eating.
After
a futile attempt to outwait those animals cowering in their
warm dens, I gave up and headed for home. They had the right
idea, I decided :))
