January 13 , 2008
We'd hoped to do this last week, but the weather didn't co-operate. Today was lots better so we headed north for our Annual Bald Eagle Hunt. In four hours we saw upwards of 130 of these striking birds (a conservative estimate).

On the way, we noticed that the Tundra Swans had returned.

A mist lifted just as we drove past the Twin Sisters. How pretty they looked in the sunshine.

Oh boy, our favorite eagle spot was no disappointment!

Adult and Immature Bald Eagles dotted the trees, and the air was filled with their cries.

This one was particularly noisy. I think he was the sentinel.

His pal seemed quite unconcerned, and set about grooming himself.

Near the river, another adult watched me like a errr hawk. ;-)

Tim figured that the young eagles were having flying lessons today.

Large groups of them swooped and soared overhead.

Here's where they all hang out, attracted by the spawning salmon.

And this one hangs around the Fish Hatchery, lazy fellow.

We decided to take a ride up to Van Zandt Dike, "a mountain that forces the Middle and South Forks of the Nooksack River to flow around it. Nearly encircled by these rivers it stands alone, a forested island." . Here's one lunch view. That's Twin Sisters Mountain again.

And here's Mount Baker hiding behind a hill.

It was a lovely day, all around.
