I
do believe that sunshine makes the Pond birds feel quite giddy. Today
it looked as if a Green Heron and a Coot were having a contest to see
who could be the Best Heron.
A Kildeer announced the start of the contest.
'Ready? Set? Let's see your best Fish Stare!'
The Green Heron immediately assumed the pose, steady as a rock.
After a few false starts, the Coot managed to balance properly.
'Well done, guys!' encouraged the Ring-necked Duck.
'Now let's see your best Slow Heron Walk!'
Smoothly, the Heron stood up tall and began a slow march.
Surprisingly, the Coot did not miss a beat.
He must have been practicing this move.
'Woohoo! Nice once, Cootie baby!' chortled the Pied-billed Grebe.
'Now let's see ya both run!'
Once again, the Heron took off with a big lead.
Those long legs cover a lot of ground quickly.
As for poor Coot - he got all tangled-up and turned-around.
With a sigh he sank into the pond. 'I give up! You win - this time!'
'Quack-quack--quaaaaahahahahahahahahaha!
I declare you were the funniest, Mr Coot.
And we always like a good laugh.'
Next time, it will be a Coot contest. We'll see who wins that one!
