Sometimes on my walks I take the road not travelled. Today I found myself on 57th Street, approaching the underpass beneath Phinney Avenue near the Zoo.

What a surprise awaited me beneath this old, damp and mossy bridge. I could see that there was something colorful on the walls

It was a lovely little art gallery, a pair of murals reflecting the proximity to the Zoo.

A jaunty giraffe greeted me with a saucy look.

Elephants sauntered slowly, ignoring the roar of the traffic above them.

'What's up?' asked the caribou.

A brightly-colored parrot peered down at me and smirked.

Yikes! Someone's been into the hair dye!

A psychedelic kangaroo smiled at the sun.

I loved these two. They looked as if they were having a grand old chat.

And a bird(?) saw me on my way. The only thing that spoiled it was the graffiti. I don't understand why some people find it necessary to deface that which someone else has spent a long time creating. Still, it remained a lovely little treat for me on a gloomy day.

I later came across a great article on the Seattle Government Website describing how the 57th Street Underpass Murals came into being in 1994. ( link )
