Finally, a somewhat sunny Saturday! Since our mountains are still snowed in, Tim suggested exploring a couple of places in Bellingham. Known as 'The City of Subdued Excitement', it's nestled close to the Canadian border. Rumor has it that among other things, Bellingham is a haven for old hippies. I dunno. I do know I love the area and the vibe, and perhaps I'd like to live there someday.

Today we visited Sehome Hill, abutting the campus of Western Washington University and Whatcom Falls.

Our first stop was the Sehome Hill , next to Western Washington University. Originally a mining and logging area, its nearly 6 miles of trails are now a protected Arboretum.

On the way to the top I found my year's first trillium trying to bloom in the shade.

Although there were newer signposts, the old, mossy-covered markers, their words worn off by the elements over the years, were very attractive.

At the top of the 630 foot hill is an 80-feet tall Observation Tower with a lovely view of Bellingham and even Canada!

Tim's laughing at the sign. If you take it too literally, you wouldn't go up.

Here's the view from the top of the Tower. Canadian Mountains are just to the right of the picture, barely visible in today's haze. And further to the right, hidden by trees, is the lovely Mount Baker.

As we walked further along, we came upon a tunnel blasted right through the rock. Perhaps this was from mining days.
