Yet another
Saturday dawned gray and gloomy here. Oh joy! We set out anyway,
north to Everett, then east along Highway 2. Tim figured we
could at least look for waterfalls and spring wildflowers.
Hah! |
We
left the main drag at Sultan and drove towards Spada Lake. There
were many lovely silver birch groves along the way.
The
road had been closed for a while and we could still see a lot of
damage from December's awful storms. Surprisingly, water levels
were quite low and the waterfalls were rather insipid.
As
we drove along the perimeter of the lake, we were disappointed to
see that many of the scenic outlook spots were closed off. The last
one wasn't, whew, and I took this view of Spada Lake. We noted that
the water level was quite low - we could see usually-submerged tree
stumps.
It
seemed like a pretty spot to have lunch, so we didl.
As
for Spring wildflowers, hummmmpppfff! They were no doubt still cowering
beneath the ground. At least the Skunk Cabbage plants made a colorful
splash in the woods along the roadside.
Here's
a closer look at a Skunk Cabbage.
A
few lonely Salmonberry flowers looked as if they were trying to
bloom.
But
these - they were everywhere along the roadside. I am still trying
to find out what they are. They're like a ball, about 2 inches in
diameter and maybe a foot tall..
As
we drove back along the other side of Spada Lake, we found a small
gap in the trees and woohoo, there were some mountains!
And
just before we turned back onto the main road at Sultan, the clouds
parted and we got another view of the mountains near Index. I've
missed the mountains a lot, so it was good to see them, even just
for a few minutes.
