Many of our favorite areas remain closed by snow or winter storm damage, so we're still doing flatland hikes. On Saturday we visited the Old Sauk Trail near Darrington. We got a surprising amount of exercise!

Tim's ready to go, at the beginning of the trail.

Nearby, the salmonberries are beginning to bloom.

There have been a few blowdowns since we were last here.

The path leads through some very old trees.

Many were moss-shrouded. It's been a long, wet winter.

Here and there, pretty trilliums dotted the woodland floor.

Hmmm, looks like the soggy ground let go of a lot of roots.

I was amazed that a wind could uproot such a large tree.

Alongside runs the Sauk River, icy blue from the mountain run-off.

I loved all the trilliums today.
