I ignored my desk this morning and decided to brave the crowds
at my favorite place for a short while. It was worth it.
The
brown bears were restless, waiting for breakfast.
In
the dappled sunlight, a mountain goat ate steadily.
These
pictures are poor quality as they were taken through smudgy glass.
But oh my goodness, Chinta (on the left) and Melati were funny,
fighting over this old scrap of burlap. They tugged and pulled and
yanked.
Every
so often they'd look up to see if anyone was watching. In the end,
Melati was left with it.
Then
they both lumbered over to the dirty window and Chinta made this
face which just cracked me up! I swear they are just like people.
For
a little while they sat there, making funny faces at us all. What
a pair!
The
orangutans here are hybrids of a Bornean and Sumatran subspecies.
Some look markedly different from others.
As
there wasn't a crowd at the new giraffe feeding station, I paid
my $5 and used my time to photograph the giraffes up close. It was
lovely!
The
two youngest giraffes are fed at this station. They eat carrots
and apples.
When they're
fed by people, they eat what's called 'browse' which is simply
branches with leaves. They'd rather eat carrots though. :) When
their attention drifts and they wander off, the keeper calls them
back with a whistle.
If
you look closely, you can see one of the new ostriches. They're
in a very secluded area right now. I was hoping they'd venture out
onto the Savannah. A keeper told me that when the ostriches appear,
all the other animals run away very quickly!
The
face says it all, doesn't it? The tiger must like the crowds as
much as I do. I'd intended to see the baby tiger but the lineup
stretched for miles. Next time :)
