MOUNT RAINIER NATIONAL PARK

June 12, 2010
It's been a while since we've visited Mount Rainier National Park, so off we went early on a gorgeous Saturday. The online papers reported a High Avalanche risk but we didn't intend to hike on the dangerous areas.

The brightness was a challenge today, as were the high-contrast shadows. It was great to be up in the sky again.

I love the drive there. The mountain suddenly appears in all sorts of places.

Whoops - there it is.

For once I was hoping the traffic light would turn red so we could stop and admire the view.
You'd find this in the city of Bonney Lake.

As we got closer and higher we ran into great snowbanks. The roads were clear.

Once inside the Park we took a hike in the Grove of the Patriarchs.

The pretty trail led to an island of ancient trees, some as old as 1,000 years.

Tim clears the way.

A look behind some of the massive logs revealed pretty collections of tiny fungi.

My face tells how much I don't love this wobbly suspension bridge leading to Ohanepecosh Island.

It was worth it though. The trees were awesome.

Some were positively gigantic.
