June 20, 2007
I took my new camera for a workout at the Zoo today. The lighting conditions were not the best - bright sunlight (not that I am complaining, you understand) and as is usual from June to September, the Zoo was very crowded. Crowds = jostling, and arms flung accidentally into your field of vision.

I stuck with the Automatic setting and on the whole I was very pleased with the results. Here are a few.

You can't tell from this picture, but the baby tiger was running at top speed. I was absolutely amazed that the picture came out as clearly as this.

He was playing with a long piece of string here, in bright sunlight at the very back of his cage, amongst tons of leaves and brush. I was pleased that this shot was fairly clear too.

I managed to find the elusive ostrich. I was extremely far away from this scenario and there was much brush in the way. Nevertheless, I managed to capture not only a stare-down between these two but a stately march-past.

Again, you can't tell from this image but the Siamang is in mid-swing. I am very impressed with the speed of the camera at this point.

I spent a short time in the Butterflies and Blooms exhibit. This bright Julia carried off the duller one. I thought it was dead so I asked one of the attendants what was going on. He explained what was happening with a smirk on his face. They're mating! I felt a bit silly. :D

He then showed me some lovely Question Mark butterflies nearby.

I found a Monarch trying to hide under a leaf. The Monarch was moving quite quickly.

The Red Ruffed Lemur was darting down the log, so I'm happy with the clarity again.

And the same is true of these two tiny Duikers who ran off at top speed as soon as they saw me leering over the bridge. Again, no motion blur, so I was thrilled.

I was astonished that this picture turned out at all. It was taken through very dirty glass with very bright glare plus reflections of several children's legs in the window. Well-done, new camera!
