It's the holiday weekend here, and we figured since most of Western
Washington was probably heading South, we'd head North to one of
our favorite places - the North Cascades Highway. This gorgeous
road is closed during the winter months, so we were anxious to see
if there had been any changes since last year. Clouds and sprinkles
of rain notwithstanding, we had a most enjoyable day.

|
Here we go,
up the I-5 towards Burlington and Route 20.
We got quite
a chuckle from this truck decoration. At a quick glance, these
guys looked real!
|
|
A
mural graced the car wash of a gas station where we filled up. We
knew it would be a long, long way between gas stations where we
were going. |
|
We
can never drive past Clark's Cabins on Route 20 without stopping
to feed the bunnies. Although the restaurant there provides all
kinds of bread and rolls, we always take them fresh lettuce and
carrots. They usually seem quite glad to have a change of menu. |
|
Just
past the bunnies we drive through Marblemount. The first time I
saw this sign, I thought "Yeah, right!" but it's true!
And having been to the "other" Alps too, I feel qualified
to make that statement. |
|
Gorge
Lake and Dam looked pretty today. This particular Dam is operated
by Seattle City Light, and Seattle gets some of its power from this
Dam. |
|
A little further
along, we stopped at the Diablo Lake Overlook and right away I
spotted this little fellow.
He was disappointed
that we had nothing for him but *ahem* there are signs everywhere
asking folks not to feed any of the animals, AND there was a Park
Ranger standing right there, so we behaved.
|
|
Yes, the water
in Diablo Lake truly is this color, and in brilliant sunshine
it is even more green!
It's silt
from the glaciers, suspended in the water.
|
|
Here's
another view of Diablo Lake. It leads into Diablo Dam, and supplies
up to 159,000 kilowatts of electrical power to Seattle. |
