This morning I spent some time in the brilliant sunshine at a nearby pond where the dragonflies were very active.

I noticed that a number of fully-grown nymphs had crawled out of the water and up the stems of plants. They will soon shed their skins on the plants and become young dragonflies.

Despite having a life span of more than a year, they only live two months as adult dragonflies. [ link ]

Here are some of the dragonflies I watched.

There were lots of Eight-spotted Skimmers. They seemed to be the most active and aggressive, often chasing smaller dragonflies away from their perches.

They were also the least shy, allowing me to get quite close.

Here's a Cardinal Meadowhawk in the sunshine.

They're just as pretty in the shade.

A pair of Northern Bluets rest on a leaf.

I think this is a Blue Dasher.

He had the most amazing green eyes.

He posed so nicely for me.
