Return To Heather Meadows and Artist Point

July 25, 2009
The road to Artist Point, a gorgeous area high up in the North Cascades between Mount Baker and Mount Shuksan is usually open only 2 - 3 months a year. On July 14th road crews finished plowing out the annual snowfall so that's where we headed today. The summer parking lot at Artist Point is one of the highest places you can drive to in Western Washington at 5,100 feet/1,554 meters. As always, it was outstanding.

Table Mountain (elevation: 5742 ft / 1750 m) looms as we approach

The panoramas reminded me of watercolor paintings.

Mount Baker (elevation: 10778 ft /3285 m) stands tall in the background.

Mount Shuksan (elevation: 9,127 feet/2,782 m) is my favorite mountain.

Lunch Spot

On the way back down we stopped at Austin Pass (elevation: 4,629 feet/1,411m) for our traditional lunch overlooking the North Cascades. It is a perfect spot for a break.

By the time we got to Picture Lake, the clouds were closing in so we headed for home.
