::: Volunteer Park, Seattle :::
August 18, 2007

We decided to have another try at visiting Volunteer Park, one of Seattle's best-known recreation areas. This time, the gates were unblocked and we had a wonderful afternoon exploring.

Volunteer Park is the home of the Seattle Asian Art Museum. It's a gorgeous-looking building, complete with stone camels guarding the entrance way.

Here's a closer look at one of the camels. As tempting as it was, we decided to visit the inside of the Art Museum on a day when the weather wasn't so nice.

Directly across from the Art Museum is a large reservoir. In front of it is a sculpture called Black Sun by Isamu Noguchi. In the distance are visible the Space Needle and a glimpse of Puget Sound.

A pair of ponds flanked the reservoir, their tranquil surfaces broken by rafts of water lilies and the occasional splash of a Koi.

There were a number of different colored water lilies standing out against the shiny green lily pads.

Here and there Koi and goldfish darted, bright splashes of color in the somewhat murky water.

Several of the larger fish swam silently around emerging now and then like a surfacing submarine.

A statue of William Seward, patriot, statesman and purchaser of Alaska was erected in 1909.

Here's the entrance to the Conservatory, one of the best surprises of the day.

Consisting of five 'houses' ( Bromeliad, Palm, Fern, Cactus and a Seasonal Display house), the Conservatory is an outstanding display of plants from all over the world.

The colors are amazing.

I loved the Cactus Room
