I spent a long time watching the furry kids at the Zoo today. It was really nice to be able to do that, as crowds were sparse. At any rate, here are three species which were my main focus.

Red Ruffed Lemur
An endangered species, the Red Ruffed Lemur is from Madagascar, off the coast of Africa

Females are usually heavier than males. They both lack coordination in their fingers and toes, so they groom themselves and each other with their teeth. Red ruffed lemurs have scent glands on their rump used for group identification.

Golden Lion Tamarin

Another of the endangered species at Woodland Park Zoo is the Golden Lion Tamarin. Currently there are about 600 found in a small area in Brazil.

Golden lion tamarins have claws instead of fingernails. They usually give birth to twins and fathers share the duties. Tamarins tend to be monogamous, staying with the same mate.

Orangutan

Here are ten pictures of Heran, a young male orangutan. Heran was born in February, 1989. Melati is his mother. He weighs 140 pounds and is still growing.

Melati hates spending the day outside, and can usually be found indoors or huddled in the doorway. Heran still likes to be around his Mum, so he too was near the doorway today, looking wistfully towards Melati as if to say 'Awww, c'mon!'
