Woodland Park Zoo: September 1, 2006

I figured it would be a madhouse at the Zoo today, being the last Friday before school starts again, but I didn't let that stop me. It was already busy when I arrived at 9:40, and by the time I left at 11:45, it was crazy, man! Here are fourteen pictures.

My first stop was the Red Pandas' area and to my delight I saw a flash of red fur on the ground. Gosh they're fast, and by the time I got near, this little fellow was already up the tree. His pal was still meandering around in the grass. It was all I could do not to shove aside the smooching couple who were standing entwined in the optimal photo-taking spot. I tried asking them if we could trade spots but they didn't speak English (so they said). Another golden opportunity down the tubes, but that's what makes it fun...sorta.
Next on my route was Lemur Land. Surprisingly, this was the only one visible. He looked as if he was trying to decide whether to run away. Perhaps he was disturbed by the enormous, (noisy) crowd at the Jaguar enclosure nearby. There was some sort of feeding treat going on, but I didn't hang around to find out what. Demophobic? Moi? Heh.
The lions were very quiet today. The Lioness was asleep in the grass and from time to time, the King would saunter over, take a look at her and move away again.
Melati was being very cute today. Here's a good picture showing her two-fingered hand. She was hanging around waiting for food.
She came over and sat near the window. I think she still remembers me from last winter, but with so many kids around, her attention is very much divided.
Belawan had taken possesion of the big hammock, and he surveyed the crowds and kept one eye on the door to the outside. When it's opened, breakfast is ready. Keepers hide the food in the bushes and rocks in their grotto.
Chinta is already outside, watching to see if any of the other orangutans get lucky in their searches.
