Spencer Island, WA

October 2 , 2010
On a dull Saturday morning we headed for Spencer Island in search of the elusive Pileated Woodpecker...again. There were many SFMBs (small, fast, mystery birds) but alas no woodpecker...again! We had a nice walk around the island. There's always something neat to see.

Bees were busy getting the last pollen out of the remaining flowers.

Here's another bee deep in wild Morning Glory goodness.

Alice In Wonderland's mushroom - someone had been nibbling on it.

Despite the fact that Spencer Island had been host to a 5K Fun Run and Walk that morning, these little mushrooms, growing in the middle of the trail remained intact.

Tim spotted a wooly bear caterpillar booking along the gravel. The band of brown in the middle means that it's either going to be a mild winter (because it's a light color) or a harsh winter (because the band is narrow). Go figure.

We also chased this beautiful Red Admiral butterfly for a while.

The blackberry bushes were dripping with fruit. Tim took this lovely picture of it.

And when we left, the sun came out. Such is life.
