October 14 , 2006
Despite a misty, foggy morning we left Seattle and headed north towards the Alpine Lakes Wilderness in the Cascade Mountains, in a hunt for Red October. Miller River Road, Money Creek Road and Lake Elizabeth were our destinations, and they proved to be excellent choices. The clouds parted and the colors simply glowed in the sunshine.

Sunlight shines through autumn leaves near Money Creek.

Vibrant colors stood out against an evergreen background.

Even the brown ferns glowed a glorious gold.

The view from our lunch spot was awesome.

Autumn flowers and foliage brightened the hillsides.

Tiny Lake Elizabeth was gorgeous, shining like a jewel in the sunlight.

I watched a Douglas Squirrel gather acorns. He was quite wary of me.

Here's another view of Lake Elizabeth. Its green appearance is the reflection of the evergreens.

Occasionally a pretty mushroom glowed in the undergrowth.

On the way home, we stopped to admire silver birches stark against the autumn colors.
It was a wonderful trip, good for all the senses.
