On a post-Thanksgiving Friday we headed for Westport and the Pacific Ocean. It was a crisp, cold and sunny day.

As we approached Westport, a small city located at the mouth of Grays Harbor, we could see that the tide was 'in'.

Historically, local Native American tribes spent summers here before white settlers arrived early in the summer of 1857. Here's one of the cottages in the area. What a marvellous view!

With its population of roughly 2000, Westport relies on fishing, shellfish harvesting, seafood processing, boat building and tourism. Whale-watching tours are offered, and most summers, Westport hosts a wonderful chainsaw-carving contest.

Oh my gosh, the wind was strong and blustery as we battled our way to the end of the floating docks. Here's Tim snapping a picture.

Yikes, it's me! Parts of the docks had no side guards and small children were hovering perilously close to the edge as the dock bounced and swayed with the waves.

A Pacific Loon dived for food right in front of us. We'd hoped to catch a glimpse of the seal which often hangs around but alas he was nowhere in sight today. No pelicans either. :\

Next we were off to check out Westhaven State Park, located on Half Moon Bay nearby. We were amazed to find the parking lot full-to-overflowing with folks in wetsuits.

Surfers were taking advantage of the brisk winds and a sunny day to catch the waves. Oh boy, it looked like fun! I overheard a surfers saying that the water temperature was about 40° F (4° C).

Still, in they went...

and out they came.
