At 11 a.m. on a sunny Labor Day morning, Tim and I chucked
cameras, water and peanut butter sandwiches into our backpacks
and went for an impromptu picnic on Spencer Island, just north
of here.
We went for the exercise and as often happens, we found some
interesting things - small treasures. |
This little
chap greeted us at the trailhead. I wonder if he was abandoned?
Things like that make me sad/angry. He wasn't there when we returned.
The path was
lined with Blackberry bushes and Mountain Ash trees, heavy with
fruit.
There were
still some wildflowers/weeds around, like this pretty Tansy.
Bright
St John's Wort glowed in the undergrowth. |
I
think this might be a Serviceberry - I'm not sure. |
Overhead three
Ospreys swooped and soared.
What
lovely birds they are. |
This
one was off to eat his catch - a small fish. |
Several
Great Blue Herons lurked in the reeds. |
They
are fairly nervous birds. |
This
insect, a wee bit on the creepy side, remains unidentified
is a male Fiery Skipper Woodland Skipper butterfly.*
At Tim's suggestion I tried Google's Image Search.
This was the result.

Thanks
to friends C and S Wood for identifying this Skipper. Washington
is out of range for it to be Fiery.

Thanks
for the laugh, Google.
