December
7th, 2014
Sunday dawned misty but soon cleared so we took a ride
up North to see if we could find some Harlequin
Ducks.
I'd heard that they sometimes winter at Rosario Beach
near Deception Pass or near Washington Park in Anacortes
(where we both locked our keys in the car many years
ago).
The good news - we got lucky right away. The not-so-good
is that they were quite far away. Nevertheless we were
happy to see these colorful birds

Beautiful,
snow-capped Mount Baker guided us North.
Rosario
Park was closed to cars but we were able to walk in.
The tide was in, and the rocks looked far away.
Hooray!
We spied some Harlequin Ducks from the edge of the bluff. |
It
was hard to miss their striking pattern, even at this great
distance. |
They
pottered around, lazing on the rock, bathing or swimming.
|
I
do believe this one spotted me too.
We
watched them for a while. |
After
a while, they began to swim further out. |
Tim
went right to the edge of the bluff. |
Off
in another direction was a rock full of Cormorants. |
A
Red-bellied Sapsucker tap-tapped 'goodbye' to us as we left.. |
We lunched
at Deception Pass Park.
The Olympic Mountains rose from the mist across the Salish Sea.
A Kingfisher
waited for leftovers.
The
drive home was pretty. It's always a treat to see the mountains.. |
Groups
of Swans were feeding at nearby farms. |
I
think these may be Tundra and Trumpeter Swans. They sure sounded
like it! |
Santa
and his assistant urged everyone to drive carefully. |
'A
fine day was had by all.' says Tim. |
Agreed.
Let's do it again soon. |
