How high's the water, mama?
Five feet high and risin'
How high's the water, papa?
Five feet high and risin'

Well, the rails are washed out north of town
We gotta head for higher ground
We can't come back till the water comes down,
Five feet high and risin'

Water, Water Everywhere

Last week, the rains came to Washington State, torrents of them. Rainfall records were set and consequently many of Washington's rivers overflowed their banks and flooded. For many unlucky folks near the rivers, it was a disaster. Some people lost everything they owned.

Today we took a spin up north to the Skagit River to see how things were faring. The rivers were still very high, and instead of beautiful glacier-blue color they were brown and silty. We made a point of stopping at Hamilton, one of the hardest-hit places. Most of Hamilton was under a layer of slime and mud, and today the small town was full of folks trying to clean up. We didn't wish to be intrusive, so we didn't take many pictures but it was truly a good (and grim) reminder of the fragility of some of the things we take for granted.

After a stop to check up on the rabbits at Bunny Hollow, Tim took us along Illabot Creek Road and up into the mountains, to get an aerial view of part of the Skagit Valley. And on the way home, we saw a few Hallowe'en decorations which were cool!
