It's been uncharacteristically HOT in Seattle this week - a little
heat wave. We welcomed the weekend and a chance to drive up into
the mountains. "Hey." we said. "Let's HIKE!".
We were very excited to find a trail at Rainy Pass in the Northern
Cascades, leading to, you guessed it, Rainy
Lake. "This trail" said the guide "is an
easy hike of one mile on a paved surface." *Swoon*. If it sounds
too good to be true, it was. Tim and I never seem to do anything
the easy way. I'm sure the trail was exactly as described, except
that it was buried under a couple of feet of snow.
Undaunted, we plowed along, hoping (a)
we were heading in the right direction and (b)
we would not disappear into a tree well if/when the snow gave way.
Luck as well as the sun was shining on us today, for we were successful
in reaching Rainy Lake, a cirque lake at the end of the trail. It
was awesome.
We meandered around the North Cascades for the rest of the day,
goggle-eyed and open-mouthed at the spectacular scenery. Washington
+ Sunshine = Spectacular!
