During the first week of October, we try to go north to see the colors. Some years, they are spectacular. This year, however, everything seemed somewhat muted. Already many of the deciduous leaves seemed to have skipped the colorful stage and gone straight to crisp and brown. Even the ground cover which is usually vibrant reds and yellows and oranges seemed duller. Nevertheless, it was a gorgeous day up in the mountains, and we loved being out in the sunshine. Here are a few pictures.

Much of the ground cover was already brown, instead of its usual red.

The bright sun almost directly overhead washed out the colors even more. Here's our favorite Mount Shuksan, at Heather Meadows.

From Artist Point I could see Mount Baker, across the Autumn foliage.

Sometimes, patches of brighter color broke the somber greens and browns.

The pathway along Artist Ridge trail was also colorful in places.

And the views from the trail were awesome, as usual.

It's hard to believe that despite the fact that the snow at Artist Point is pretty well all gone, it's very possible that the road could be closed because of snow at any time. Last year we made this trip on the first Saturday in October, and the next day, the road was closed for the winter. Some years, this lovely place is only open for a couple of months.

It was lovely to sit in the sunshine. We left a very foggy damp Seattle.
