The weekend was one of Seattle's summer gems, so we decided to have a third try at reaching Sunrise, an observation area in Mount Rainier National Park. Each time we'd tried before, the road had been closed, but we were in luck today !

The drive up to Sunrise was awesome - it's hard to describe the feelings as you round a bend in the road and there is Mount Rainier, staring you smack in the face and looking close enough to touch. Understandable too was the reason that the road would be closed in less than perfect weather - at times the sheer drop at the side of the road was very scary !

Another treat was the beautiful Alpine meadow which surrounded the visitors' center. One almost expected to hear a yodeller, or a Swiss cowbell (were it not for the noise of the hundreds of cars).

On the way down the mountains, we stopped at White River Campground and hiked down a hill to the White River, where we spent a while sitting in the hot sunshine, watching freezing water tumble over the boulders so quickly that you could hear a constant clunking noise as the rocks smacked into each other. Mount Rainier towered over us here too.
