We had a good chuckle at this sign.

Here's the observation deck. Mount St. Helens is still 4 1/2 miles away.

What a glorious sight it was.

Many of the trails were still closed because of snow and rockslides. We climbed as far as we could on the trail above the Johnston Ridge Observatory.

Off in the distance we were able to spot a sliver of blue - Spirit Lake.

A closeup pf the crater shows that the lava dome is still growing.

The trail rises gently, with lovely scenes everywhere you look.

Here's the view from our lunchspot, Loowit Viewpoint, just west of the Observatory.

The landscape gives us many reminders that we are in the blast zone.

On the way back, we stopped at nearby Coldwater Lake, formed by a debris dam resulting from the eruption of Mount St. Helens. It's popular for fishing and picnics.

Whoa Nellie! There goes the birthday boy!

I sure hope he can swim. Because I can't!

It was a perfectly lovely day in all respects.
