Diablo Dam
is straight ahead in this picture. The area is also surrounded
by many majestic peaks which were hiding behind the clouds today.
We figured
this was a great spot for lunch.
|
|
We indulged
ourselves in a treat from the Skagit General Store at Newhalem.
The fudge here is out of this world!
Tim ate the
one on the left - Hikers Fudge and mine was Chocolate Caramel
Praline.
This year
we limited ourselves to one piece each. Last year we bought a
huge box and demolished it.

The
next lake and dam along the road is Ross Lake. It is a very blue
color, more so on a sunny day. It's a good contrast with green Diablo
Lake. |
|
We decided
we'd head to Washington Pass and visit the Overlook. By the way,
we were amazed at the lack of people here on this nice day.
A White-Winged
Crossbill was scouring the ground near the Visitor Center.

|
Summoning
up my courage and refusing to think of my Vertigo, I followed
Tim up the path to the first lookout.
Not only did
he go to the edge, he climbed out onto a rock. I couldn't look!
|
|
This was close
enough for me, and I didn't stay there for very long.
Ugh! (But
the view was great, when I dared to look.)
|
|
Yes, this
is the path. At one point I was spread against a rock, inching
my way around a corner. There were no guardrails. I tried not
to let Tim hear me whimpering.
And again,
the view was great when I peeked.

|
At the top
of the climb we had a wonderful view of Liberty Bell Monument.
It's an impressive
collection of granite peaks and is very popular with rock climbers.
|
|
I
thought the scenery at the summit of the outlook was starkly beautiful. |
