Aha - I think they're showing off for a female Hooded Merganser who drifted past.

I was hoping so hard to find the Aggressive Owl. Sadly, we didn't see it.

Eyes on the ground, Commander Tim forges ahead.

And he spots mushrooms! Fungi! Everywhere!

I loved them. They glistened like tiny jewels beneath the big old trees.

They were all shapes and sizes, and astonishingly beautiful.

The dark, glistening leaves provided a nice contrast.

Some blended in almost perfectly.

Others were delicate and fragile-looking.

Still others seemed sturdy and hardy.

Speed Bump by Dave Coverly
We walked a couple of miles, so we figured it was time to stop for lunch.

This morning Tim found the cartoon on the left during his readings. 'Oooooh!' we thought. 'This is An Omen!' So we headed off to Spencer Island, not far away, hoping this would be our lucky day in the Quest for the Pileated Woodpecker.

I wish I could say we were successful, but it was yet another fruitless visit. We did talk to a Park Ranger, and he gave us his card so we could send him our email address. He promised he'd email the next time he saw one.

It didn't dampen our day, however, for it was a perfect day for a walk in the woods. Best of all, it was great to be outside again. For one reason or another we've not been on a road trip since the end of September.
