Next stop on the route was the picnic area known as Big Four. We've stopped here many times in the past as well, and I looked at it with new eyes now I know a little bit of the history of it.

"Big Four Picnic Area: The three-story inn was built in 1921, with 50 rooms and five large gables. It had tennis courts, a 9-hole golf course, and an artificial lake. "Babs' All-Girl Band" entertained visitors. It was a popular destination for tourists arriving via railroad, and was used as a rest and recuperation facility by the U.S. Coast Guard in World War II. The sheer granite cliffs of Big Four Mountain arose almost at the Inn's back door. From Monte Cristo a large number four can be seen in ice on the peak, hence its name."
