It was his job with the British Army which took the family to the Sudan.

"Sudan was ruled jointly by the British and Egyptians until 1956, when it received its independence and was declared a republic."

On the back of the picture is noted "...taken in 1909 and sent to Laura before their marriage - a self-portrait. (went to Sudan in 1906)"
