Spencer
Island
February 27, 2016
Yes
indeed, it's a gray, damp and miserable
Saturday - again! Today we revisited
Spencer Island where we
knew, if nothing else, we'd get a bit of
exercise and fresh(?) air.
|
A Red-winged Blackbird takes off as soon as he sees me.
The tide is in and the areas surrounding the trail are
flooded. But wait!
There on the top branch of the tallest dead tree sits a
young Bald Eagle!
A little further on we spy a Great Blue Heron, intent on
something.
Aha - he's looking for breakfast, or an early lunch -
kersplash!
Good grief - all that fuss for such a small morsel.
We cross the bridge onto Spencer Island and see another
Heron in action.
What a surprise - a tiny spring flower gleams in the
mist.
There were lots of these little birds flitting around -
I don't know what they are.
High overhead a second young Bald Eagle checks us out.
I loved this festive display of raindrops.
We wondered if this was a parent, keeping an eye on his
kids.
Oooooh - Slime Mold! '
In
the motile phase, this
plasmodium, creeps about by amoeboid movement.'
Here's a sight I've never seen - a Great Blue Heron
swimming!
A second parent, watches the kids at play.
This one is not impressed with my approach and takes off
quickly.
Meanwhile, one of the kids tries to look as stately as
possible.
Chest out! Tail in! Head up!
Whoa Nellie - check out the hook on that beak!
As usual, there's always something to see, even on a bad
day.
