What a surprise we had at the Skagit Estuary today when we came across a family of Turkey Vultures.  With their small red featherless heads and their flappy flight they were easy to identify.  They were fairly friendly and we were able to watch them for a while.

They flew to some nearby trees and watched us eat our snacks.  They like open spaces.
We wondered if Mom and Dad were taking the kids out for a few lessons.

'You go first.'  'No, YOU go first.'  'I don't want to.'  'Me neither'  'Leave me alone.'

'Hey!  You pushed me!'  'Well get going then.'  'I'm telling Mom!'

You two behave yourselves and listen to your dad.

Spreading your wings like this on a sunny day can
dry your wings, warm your body, and bake off bacteria.

Look how far I can spread mine.

And see that guy over there?  He is VERY important so always be polite to him.

I'm looking at you.

Here are some Turkey Vultures we saw on a trip through Oregon in 2008.

Anyone see any food yet?

This house was a bit freaky.  At one point there were 30 or 40 Turkey Vultures nearby.
The three on the right side of the house have their eyes on something special.

Drat.  He's young.  No point waiting around for him to pop his clogs.

Nothing over here either.

Might as well give my wings a good sunbath while we're waiting.

We enjoyed watching the Turkey Vultures on Saturday.
