Westport Weekend 2011

February 11 - 13, 2011
We enjoyed our mid-February break last year so much that we decided to do it again. As the weekend drew near, the weather tanked but eh, that's life in the Pacific Northwest. Tim had booked the time off so we left early on a dismal, cold, damp Friday morning.

Day One: Nisqually Wildlife Refuge

Here's a look at Mount Rainier under the leaden, heavy clouds, taken from our road less-followed.

Our first stop was the Nisqually Wildlife Refuge. We were excited to see the new boardwalk.

Far off across the wetlands we caught a glimpse of the Olympic Mountains.

At first the boardwalk winds through a small forest, bordered by ponds and lots of trees.

Near the Twin Barns we came to a wide open area.

There was the new boardwalk, winding across the wetlands as far as we could see.

To the East were the Cascade Mountains. I bet the views are spectacular on a clear day!

The boardwalk is almost complete now - just a few touches like benches along the way remain.

Occasionally we stopped to watch and photograph some of the bird life.

There were a number of Great Blue herons, looking for lunch.

The Least Sandpiper was hard to see. It was very tiny and very well-camouflaged.
