This is a view from Mabe Hill Summit,
an area with several working farms. Soon it will be time to turn and go
westward. |
But oh my, here we are right outside
the Painted Hills again so in we go for another look. This time it's morning
light, and the hills look different again. An unidentified bug is enjoying
a roadside sunflower. |
Tim and I decide to hike 1/2 mile
up a steep hill to a viewpoint. We'd been far too hot and tired to attempt
it yesterday, but today it was a piece of cake. Out came the sunblock
and the funny hats once again. |
Here I am losing patience with a
bird that I've been trying to photograph. It never did sit still long
enough, alas. |
The view from the
top was well-worth the climb. It was absolutely stunning. |
Rumor has it that the hills are at
their best in springtime, when wildflowers are in bloom. Perhaps that
will be a trip for another year. |
Today we took the time to travel
to several of the other trails as well. I think this was the Painted
Cove Trail. |
This was aptly named
Red Rock. I didn't want to leave, but it was time to go. |
As we begain our journey west and
north, we were able to have great views of several of the mountains along
the way. This is Mount Jefferson, the second highest mountain in Oregon
at 10,497 feet (3,199 meters). It is classified as an extinct volcano. |
Mount Hood is the highest peak on
Oregon at 11,237 feet (3,426 meters). It is a dormant volcano. Nice touches
from the Oregon Department of Transportation are small roadside signs
telling you the names of the mountain(s) at which you are looking. It
was much appreciated! |
