Yay! Here
we are at the Oregon Zoo. It's more than 100 years old and is
a combination of old-style cages with bars and wires, and newer
larger outdoor areas and grottoes.
Some of the
enclosed areas were very dark, and taking photos in the dark through
screens and bars was a great challenge.
I believe
that the Zoo runs Summer Day Care programs because there were
a gazillion kids there.
Nevertheless,
we gave it our best shot. And I loved it!

The
first stops were two of the very dark areas. Here, a tiger lounges
in the far corner of his grotto. |
|
A leopard
paused near the window for a moment, then resumed his stalking.
|
|
The penguin
area was being cleaned while we were there, so the little fellows
weren't too active, except for one who dived through the water
like a torpedo.
|
|
Several
Polar bears were in another grotto. This one did a mysterious,
non-stop "dance" four steps forward and four steps back.
It was very strange.

|
Oh I LOVED
the Mandrills! Unfortunately this one was behind glass so my pictures
had lots of reflections.
|
|
Here's another
Mandrill in the same cage, sitting and staring pensively at the
crowds. I wonder what he's thinking?
|
|
A Siamang
and a White Cheeked Gibbon were just hangin' out.
|
|
Several elephants
ignored us in favor of breakfast.
|
|
Tim
took this lovely picture of a Gerenuk. What a beautiful face it
had. |
