In mid-August we headed west to the Olympic Peninsula for 5 days, staying in the town of Forks and taking a number of day trips to some of our favorite places.

Forks is now a hub of activity, thanks to the popularity of the Twilight novels so that provided an extra bit of fun.

As always, we had a great time.

Tim took a lot of beautiful infra-red pictures on the trip. A link to them and some of his color photos is ( here ).

Day 1: Hurricane Ridge and Rialto Beach

We took the ferry from Edmonds to Kingston and drove northwest towards Port Angeles where we stopped for lunch on Hurricane Ridge, high up in the Olympic Mountains. The panorama there is gorgeous.

That day was 'Get Into A National Park Free' day, and many folks were taking advantage of the savings. The parking lot was like Grand Central Station.

There are a number of hiking trails so Tim and I took a short one along a ridge. We could see clouds already descending and partially obscuring our vision.

I am always surprised at how very tame the animals are up on the Ridge. This Blue Grouse came right up to my feet.

A pair of deer grazed right next to us as we ate our lunch.

After checking in at the Forks Motel we took a ride to Rialto Beach. The sky was covered with hazy clouds and the beach was covered with people ready for campouts. We scrambled up and over huge piles of driftwood cast ashore by the tides.

Here's the view from the beach side of the driftwood logs. I love, love, love the sight, sound and the smell of the ocean.

'Let's stay all night!' jokes Tim. We had intended to walk along the beach to Hole-In-The-Wall rock however the tide was in, so we weren't able to do that.

We watched flocks of pelicans fly past.

Day 2: the Quinault Rainforest and the Pacific Beaches

On our way to the Quinault Rainforest we spied a sign for a Big Cedar Tree. No kidding! It dwarfed Tim, and reminded me a lot of the trees in the Wizard of Oz movie.
